Do You Really Need to Lose Weight?

By On February 24, 2009 No Comments

The subject of weight loss is a tricky subject in America. Self-images get distorted by what we see in the media, especially on TV and in the movies. So many young girls (and boys, too) think they are fat, when they are actually underweight and become anorexic or bulimic, or have other eating disorders.

For many losing weight is a good way to improve one’s overall health and maybe necessary for one’s survival. But for those whose concept of their bodies are off kilter, trying to lose weight can become a horrible nightmare that can lead to one’s death.

Figuring out when you need to lose weight and when you do not is an important step in taking control over your health care. This is your body and reaching that balance point of your optimum weight can add years to life.

So should you be taking off some pounds? While this depends upon your personal judgment, in general, if you are more than 20 pounds overweight, losing those pounds can improve your health.

The first thing to do is to look-up the recommended weight for someone of your size and age. Next take into consideration that everyone’s body is different. Your ratio of fat to muscle will be different than someone else’s. And being a little heavier maybe just right for you. If you are an athlete, for example, than those “extra pounds” may be all muscle that you need for your work.

Check with your doctor if you feel like your weight is out of balance. A doctor can tell if your weight is normal or not. And it maybe time to lose some weight.

There are people, however, who definitely do not need to lose weight. Hey, if you aren’t as thin as your favorite actor or model, that doesn’t mean you need to lose weight. Here is a little behind the scenes secret: Models and actresses are airbrushed in photos to look more toned. They wear clothes that enhance their shape. And they are often forced, for their jobs, to weigh less than is healthy for them.

If your body weight is normal, you do not need to lose weight, even if your pants are a size bigger than the celebrity of the month.

There are also periods in your life when it is natural to be gaining weight. This is especially common during puberty and for the first few years into your early twenties. If you are gaining weight, check out the rest of your body – are you going through a growth spurt in height as well?

If you have started working out, you may also be gaining weight, at first. As you tone your muscles, you will look better, but may weigh more. That is because muscles are heavier than fat. More muscles and less fat is a good thing.

Finally don’t base your weight loss or gain decisions simply because someone else makes a rude comment about your looks. People are cruel. Remember that everyone has a different body make up. If you are happy with your weight and it is within the normal range for someone of your age and height, chances are that the rude comment is stemming from other issues, not because you actually need to lose weight.

Be happy with yourself and eat a healthy diet. There is an optimum weight for you, but you get to decide what it is and whether losing weight is the right thing to do.

Epiphone Guitars Impressions

By On February 23, 2009 No Comments

Epiphone guitars have a long story. Epiphone was a family business established in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulo, a greek violin maker, as “the House of Stathopoulo”. In 1923 they incorporated and at this stage made mostly high quality and fancy banjos. In 1928 the name was changed to “Epiphone” after Epi Stathopoulo, chairman of the company and one of the founder’s sons. In the 1930’s, the company modified its emphasis to guitars. Epiphone successfully switched to guitar production.

The C.G. Conn Company (a band instrument builder) bought Epiphone in 1953 and moved production to Philidelphia (although the labels still said New York). This was done because New York Epiphone workers were in conflict with the Stathopoulio family. Later, in 1955, the Stathopoulo family regained control, but few if any instruments were made in 1956 and 1957.

Epiphone guitars draw interest from different kinds of buyers. Someone collects older Epiphones as vintage guitars. Others buy the newer Epiphones as habitual playing and performance guitars, whether they find them new or used. Epiphone belongs to the Gibson family of brands. Many modern Epiphone models closely track the models sold under the Gibson brand, but they are considerably less expensive. Debate rages among guitar players as to whether the price differential is justified.

Many believe that Gibson brand guitars are of higher quality, and worth higher prices. Others love their Epiphones, and wouldn’t trade them for any other guitars. Meanwhile, vintage guitar collectors prize older Epiphones partly for their historical interest.

I collect and play mostly vintage Gibson guitars and recently started purchasing Epiphones to give the Gibsons a break. I have been very amused with the new Prophecy series from Epiphone. Futuras with the EMG’s and the SG GX with the Dirty Fingers all play and sound huge. I started purchasing Dirty Fingers PUP’s two years ago to replace standard Epiphone PUP’s in my other Epiphones when they first became available from Gibson. I’m very happy. Epiphone had the same idea and made this an easy purchase without my having to reconfigure the electronics. All I can say is if you get a chance to get a Epiphone Prophecy series guitar, buy it while they are still available. They are more than worth the small investment if you are a serious musician.

As a absolutely fan of Gibson guitars it very likely doesn’t surprise you that there are a lot of Epiphone guitars that I would buy and that I have recommended to other people. Epiphone’s are great for people who enjoy the look and feel of a Gibson, especially the Les Paul style guitars, but who’s budget doesn’t allow the luxury of a Gibson. Obviously if anyone thinks to compare the Epiphone Les Paul with a Gibson Les Paul, he has unrealistic expectations. But having said that, most Epiphones sound pretty well with some new strings and a set up. If you invest a few more dollars into a new set up pickups, you can really get some fantastic sounds that would be more than appropriate for a live application.

The Epiphone Les Pauls aren’t the only guitars that Epiphone makes. Their hollowbody and semi hollow body guitars are indeed great instruments and have tremendous value in terms of the quality of tone versus the price that you pay. And most of the Epiphone hollowbodys I have ever played play excellent right out of the box. Again you will very likely want to take it to your local guitar shop and get it set up with some new strings and maybe new pickups for the truely ambitious that want to customize their sound. But if you do that, you will have a great sounding guitar for a very affordable price and you don’t have to buy new pickups or get a set up as part of your initial cost so it makes it that much more affordable. If you love Gibsons but can’t really make that kind of financial committment for a guitar, I recommend trying an Epiphone and see how you like it. I think you will be intensely enthusiastic.

The Epiphone Tony Iommi Signature G-400 Electric Guitar is what you want for heavy hitting sound. Classic SG attitude is enhanced with black chrome hardware, mother-of-pearl cross fingerboard inlays and, on the solid mahogany body, a matching black finish. The Gibson USA Tony Iommi pickups put out the firepower required for maximum destruction and the slim-tapered mahogany neck is fast. Epiphone guitars can be a big surprise!

Starting from 1873, Epiphone instruments have been proudly played and endorsed by professional musicians. And while every Epiphone is the result of over 126 years of experience working directly with musicians, only a few embody a single artists individual creativity and spirit. The Epiphone Signature Collection guitars are as mythical and as individual as the artists themselves. The Les Paul guitar is equivalent of Rock and Roll. No other guitar is so powerful and and gives you the sustain and the sound of a Les Paul. If its got Les Pauls signature on the headstock, its the real thing… Don’t accept substitutes!

Not Just for Hobbyists, Slot Cars are Here to Stay

By On February 23, 2009 No Comments

An age-old fancy, slot cars remain a family favorite even among today’s computer games and handheldgame consoles. Running round and round the track in dedicated slots, there’s a thrill in controlling the speed at the turn and controlling a toy car running around the track.

Whether laid out in an simple oval or in a figure-eight, toy slot cars aggressively make the turn, with skillful controls by the user. This hobby is very engrossing and not limited to boys. The most recently released cars are very detailed and the fans will want to spend as much time on painting the cars.

The other facet of the hobby is, of course, the track. Creating the layout of the track is a very engrossing activity. Fans usually start out with fast tracks, and move on to create more challenging tracks. The thought that the tracks will be placed on top of a table is an added degree of difficulty which enthusiaststake for granted. It can be said that they expect it.

Buy Slot Cars for Sale

Slot cars were first sold by Lionel in 1912, and the development and popularity has been growing through the years. The most widespread size is the HO, which originally scaled like scale-model train sizes. To a newcomer, there doesn’t seem to be any difference between recent slot cars and those of fifty years ago. But a closer study would easily show that late-model cars are built to be faster and more manoeuvrable. And with the development of the digital slot cars during the mid-1990’s slot cars have kept up to date with technology.

Slot car fans spend lots of time enjoying this type of toy. Though it has advanced beyond being a toy to one of engrossing hobby. To a real fan there are still things lots of things which can be done to make the cars run faster, the tracks better and the races more exciting.

Texas Defensive Driving School Blossom

By On February 22, 2009 No Comments

Many US states chiefly amongst them, Texas and Florida, have pushed the advancement of defensive driving online classes.Training companies have grown like weeds since several states began to persuade drivers who had been ticketed to take defensive driving classes. In many areas, you may trade your ticket for class time. The result is you learn in school and get that ticket canceled from your record. Some of these organizations even offer internet defensive driving school.

So, what is responsible for the surge in TX defensive driving we are witnessing? Ticket revenues are a chief cash cow for many states. To give a part of this up in return for education indicates the schools truly work well. There has been rising pressure for more and better driver education for two main reasons. The mortality rate from automobile crashes has gotten out of control especially with drivers under 25. Such mortality rates as well as the collision costs, are putting a tremendous strain on the insurance companies profits reducing their ability to offer affordable insurance.

Even if you have only had your driver’s license for a few days, you have already witnessed what sort of foolishness heeds warnings out on the road.

The key to achievement in any pursuit is to adopt a healthy attitude of pride; are you proud to be a good driver? Just as many other things in life, defensive driving is a matter of your attitude.

Driving a car is the closest most of us can ever come to flight under our own control. Just step on that gas and go, go, go! It’s too easy to become careless and even forget that there are others out there on the road with us.

When you realize that many of those other drivers you are out there with are amateurs, this may well represent a serious threat to you and others, this is usually when the light goes on and you start to change your driving patterns for the better.

For a driver to transcend from amateur to elite with nominal effort, you simply need to appreciate that stupid drivers, quite possibly yourself included, signifies a real threat to your health and wellbeing. Without being overly dramatic; the risks are quite genuine and the consequences are life and death.

If you understand this, then you are making great strides in becoming a well informed and safe defensive driver. Watch everything and everyone around you, from the time you get into your car to when you park at the end of the trip. Considerate drivers achieve longer lives and spend less on auto insurance; two admirable goals to achieve wouldn’t you agree?

Natural Yeast Infection Remedy

By On February 22, 2009 No Comments

A natural yeast infection remedy is often the preferred treatment for the condition as these do not have the same side effects as non-natural medications. Most yeast infections occur in people whose immune systems are compromised and/or whose intestinal flora is out of balance. To keep yeast infections at bay it is important to build a strong immune system and keep your intestinal flora balanced. It is recommended to boost ones immunity with extra doses of vitamin D and zinc.

Is It Safe to Use a Natural Yeast Infection Remedy?

Any of the suggested natural yeast infection remedies are completely safe to use. And unlike some prescription medications, there are no known negative side-effects.

Don’t use antibiotic cream or antibacterial soap! Yeast is a fungal infection, not a bacterial infection.

What is the best Natural Yeast Infection Remedy?

Believe it or not acidophilus-containing yogurts, garlic and unsweetened cranberry or blackberry juice should be ingested regularly as they have been shown to prevent and reduce yeast infections. The acidophilus bacteria is found naturally in yogurt and some cheeses and is known to combat yeast infections. There are also some acidophilus supplements that may help with the production of acidophillus.

Go to the store and buy a small carton of “plain” yogurt — doesn’t matter whether it is name brand or store brand or is nonfat, lowfat or wholefat because you are NOT going to eat it. But make sure it is PLAIN with NO fruit, NO added sugar (milk sugar listed on the carton doesn’t count of course), and NO flavoring in it of ANY type.

Alternatively, find a fresh clove of garlic and carefully peel the skin off of it. Be careful not to damage the clove as you peel it as the juices from the garlic sting some people. Try applying a thin layer and massaging it deep into the skin to heal and soothe the affected area.

Many antibiotics, like penicillin, are based on the bacteria-killing chemicals found in fungi. They kill off natural bacteria, creating space for fungi to move in. Probiotics, sometimes referred to as “friendly” bacteria, suppress the growth of potentially harmful organisms, which is why probiotic supplements have been explored as a natural yeast infection remedy.

If you are in any way uncertain, consult a health care provider to modify your diet and/or treat this condition directly with an effective, all natural yeast infection control product.

Real Estate Conversation From Inside the Trenches

By On February 21, 2009 No Comments

Last night I talked shop about real estate properties with a business colleague. We’ve worked together on some houses in the past and he’s very knowledgable both in real estate training courses and in actual real world experience.

And most of it is not what the real estate gurus would have you believe.

It takes much more dedication and persistence than the real estate gurus tell you it does. I’m not going to say it’s hard at least it’s not hard to understand.

THe tough part for the majority of people is remaining persistent pushing through all the no’s to get to those yes deals which are highly profitable and make or break your business.

It was a very revealing conversation about the overall state of the economy as well as the more micro state of the real estate economy.

He recounted a tale of one of the properties he’s had for about 16 months.

You’ve probably heard (or been part of) a similar tale where you buy a property for a fast fix up and it turns into the nightmare on elm street.

You’ve probably seen this type of rehab projects on the A&E TV show Flip This House and there’s another show called Flip That House.

It was supposed to be a quick fix and turnaround deal…in and out. But it turned into 6 months of hell.

After real estate negotiation, financing, and bringing in a partner he was able to get the property fixed up in what turned out to be a six-month process and the original budget of $40,000 mushroomed out of control into a completion budget of $62,000.

So as you can see both the time estimate and cost to repair budget were way way off. And not in a conservative way.

This has definitely been a super frustrating property for him as evidenced by him talking about various details of the project to me for roughly 35 minutes.

I could sense the pain in his voice.

Tough as it was for me to hear and I’m sure for him to say it was a good thing. It forced him to reevaluate the strategy he was using in this current market.

The biggest problem are the false expectations setup by what you see on TV…and mainly what they don’t show you on TV

It’s easy when you’ve been in the business for years and have reliable construction workers, but most people don’t. And if you just hire a general contractor most of the time his fees are too high to make it profitable for you.

He’s moving into the tried and true, buy it for a small discount and hold it as rental appreciation strategy.

Regular people like you and me have been getting wealthy with this buy-and-hold real estate strategy almost since the beginning of time. Robert Kyosaki would call it the get rich slow method.

Even though it’s slow isn’t it worth it to you to become wealthy?

How to Select the Best South Florida wedding Musicians for your wedding

By On February 21, 2009 No Comments

Selecting the best South Florida wedding Ceremony Musicians for your wedding can either create magical times, or put a damper on your perfect day. What ensues are some suggestions and things to avoid in selecting your South Florida wedding band.

Hire the Pros

Performing a wedding ceremony requires professionalism and a musical timing that many students have yet to attain.

In performing music during the wedding procession, the musicians must be able to time the music’s tempo, start, ending, as well as be able to go into a “looping pattern” if necessary to accommodate the length and timing of the ceremony processional.

They should also be able to execute a musically dramatic moment upon the entrance of the bride. This moment is amongst the most memorable at any wedding ceremony, and must be well-executed for maximum impact.

Classical Musicians Can Add Traditional Flair

Classical musicians can add an air of romance and tradition to any wedding ceremony. Not only from the sound of a classical ensemble, but the appearance can be very elegant.

A harpist with a flute player, (referred to as a “flautist”) are among the most popular instrumentation, often with the addition of a violinist. String quartets, trios, Woodwind quintets and brass choirs are sometimes used for dramatic effect.

If you are considering this option, be sure to allow between $500-$1,200 for a small enemble.

Wedding Band Musicians Offer Flexibility

Many ceremonies are also performed by the keyboardist and woodwind player (sax and flute) from the band that will play dance music at the reception. These South Florida wedding musicians can perform classical pieces using great sounding symphonic sounds from the keyboard, plus to the flute player.

They can then morph into to jazz piano and saophone for the cocktail hour, and play standards, contemporary music and Broadway music in contrast to the ceremony repertoire. It can also be easier on the budget to use the band musicians for your South Florida wedding ceremony music.

Work At Home

By On February 20, 2009 No Comments

Opportunities

In today’s hectic world, work at home opportunities exist in their thousands and hundreds of thousands. These opportunities range from Lingerie parties, Consultancy, Creative writing or artwork or Computer generated opportunities; running every aspect of your own business, and all the various parts in between.

The changes in 200 years since the first pioneers crossed the great expanse of America are immense. Commuting can take hours, some people getting up at 5am and only returning after 7pm. When do you see your children and friends I wonder?

With the cost of gasoline rising and resources running out, even more evolutionary changes will be taking place. Be at the head of the game not one of the losers that follow. But before you decide how much or how little work at home you are going to do, you need to fully consider all of the aspects that work at home requires.

Definition

What exactly are we talking about when we say ‘work at home’? Do we mean; cleaning and cooking, or jobs around the home, or running a business from home? Well I suppose it can mean any of those things, but for the purpose of this article we are thinking of generating an income from home. Having a home based office from where your money making projects are generated.

Work At Home Hours

One of the attractions of working at home is being able to work when and how you want. Flexible hours, freedom of choice, doing as much or as little as you feel like.

Work At Home Lifestyle

To decide if you are the sort of person suited to ‘work at home’ and if your life style fits with a work at home arrangement, then follow the path to a better life:-

Five pointers everyone needs to consider before deciding to create a work at home lifestyle.

1. Do you have the required skills base for work at home?

  • Computing Skills
  • Creative Skills
  • Organisational Ability
  • Practical Skills
  • Transferable Skills

People usually have many more skills than they think. Hobbies often use considerable abilities, but are not thought of as important in the context of work.

Task

Write down all the things you know you are good at. Write down all the things you love to do. Is there a match? Eg. An example would be. You are good at creative writing, but don’t see it as a serious opportunity for an income, but you could use these skills in writing copy either for your own business or even someone else’s company.

2. Are you the right personality type to become successful at work at home?

  • Are you able to discipline yourself?
  • Focus
  • Dash of obsessive compulsion helps
  • Do you thrive in isolation or chaos
  • Are you an independent thinker
  • Do you work better in a team? (that team could be family members)
  • Will you miss the socialising at work (Maybe not the Office Politics!)

3. What size of support network do you have?

  • Partner who encourages you to branch out.
  • Parents or other extended family, who will help out when required.
  • Professional help, ie accountant.
  • Friends who will not be dream stealers.
  • Friends who have done something similar and will give advice and relevant information.

4. What sort of facilities do you need to get started?

  • Telephone/fax answering machine
  • Computer
  • Car
  • Desk (this can be the kitchen table: Anita Roddick of Body Shop, started her business on the kitchen table)
  • Other specialised items

5. What is your financial situation?

  • Do you have a partner who is in regular employment and can support you while you get started?
  • Have you funds put by until the work at home income starts coming in?
  • Are there grants available to help you get started?
  • Are you already up to the limit in debt, and this is a last stab at making it big and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps?

Well you might just make it lucky but experience says that if you can’t manage your personal finances, then managing business finances will go the same way. “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you always got.” Quote from Aristotle. It looks like things haven’t changed much in over 5 thousand years. So if you are not good with money then get someone else to do it, or go on a course and really learn how to manage money. So you have answered all the questions and you still feel it is right for you. What now?

Plan, Plan, Plan.

Very few things happen by accident. Set yourself a target day and stick to it.

Prepare

  • Work towards that target, setting yourself lesser goals to achieve along the way. I know it sounds obvious, but so many people do not do the obvious.
  • Get funding in place, even if it does mean missing the family holiday this year.
  • Learn skills you may be lacking. Go on courses.
  • Set yourself up with the necessary facilities.
  • Give your employer the appropriate notice to fit with your target. (No don’t give yourself two weeks holiday in-between, you will lose the momentum of working)
  • Have a clear picture in your mind’s eye of how you will be in your new lifestyle, and experience in your mind how it feels.

Benefits of Work At Home

  • Work the hours to suit yourself
  • More motivated because you are working for yourself and your family
  • See more of your family.
  • Just by not commuting, you could save two to three hours a day, 14-21 hours a week. That is more than a whole day’s working time. How much more could you get done with an extra day a week.
  • You don’t have to deal with office politics. How much time does that waste?
  • No more unnecessary meetings. How much time do they waste?

Yes even when you work at home you will have to have meetings with customers and you may have to deal with office politics with customers, but not all the time. At this rate, I can see we shall be saving another 14 hours, which makes 2 days a week extra. Life could be less stressful, which leads to better relationships with your spouse, children or other family members and everyone could be happier as a result.

So now you can’t wait to get started, The American Dream, Make it come true.

Warning

If you say yes to three or more of any of these points, don’t give up your day job.

  1. I like to stay in bed till after lunch.
  2. I am easily distracted from the job in hand.
  3. Other people’s needs are more important than mine.
  4. Social phone calls are more important over work activity.
  5. It is lunchtime and you haven’t even started yet.
  6. It’s a lovely day so I’ll just do a bit of yard work before getting on.
  7. Suddenly the children are home from school and need help with homework or need to be ferried to their after school activities.
  8. Once the children are in bed, you decide it’s not worth starting now, and wait until tomorrow.
  9. I am not good at disciplining myself to start work at a set time then stopping at a set time.
  10. It’s all a great idea but…

Conclusion

If you feel you have the desire to work at home, then follow your energy. If it feels  right to you then it probably is. You can use your mind to plan, project and budget for the future, but listen to your feelings and your stress reaction to ideas, because your body never lies. The mind is a very complicated piece of equipment, and is programmed with all sorts of rules and regulations, which can get in the way of what is right for you. If however you pay attention to how your body feels and there is a buzz and energy about your ideas, then you are on the right path. All you have to do is to follow that path to a better life, but remember it isn’t for everyone but you probably know by now if it is for you.
